Porsche’s 911 replacement, the 928 deployed an alloy V8 attached to a rear-mounted gearbox, and the galvanised body had aluminium doors and bonnet, plus body-coloured plastic bumpers – which was radical for its time. The 928 was named European Car of the Year at launch. Critics immediately recognised the advances inherent in the 928 over the 911, and the car was universally praised as one of the greatest ‘GT’ cars of all time. It handled, it was quick, it looked fantastic and it was comfortable. With the 928, Porsche created a serious long distance grand-touring car that could also tackle twisting B-roads with ease, thanks to super-direct steering, 50/50 weight distribution and a clever Weissach rear axle that kept the car firmly planted. Porsche continuously developed their range-topper throughout its production life, starting with the S, the S2, and S4 guise before introducing the GT in 1989. Capable of 169mph and reaching 100mph in 5.6 seconds the 5ltr V8 produced 326bhp. The GT also enjoyed a 5-speed manual gearbox for those who wanted a more sporty driving experience. The GT model also features twin exhausts, uprated camshafts, and sports suspension – the ultimate 928 had arrived!
Our car is one of 2,078 examples and was registered in 1989 to its first and only owner, the record producer Pete Waterman. It’s an original UK right-hand drive car and is a rare manual 928 GT finished in Guards Red externally and internally a Black Leather sports interior with piped red seats and carpets to match with. Accompanying the car is a Porsche Dealer service history up to November 2001 when the car had driven 20695 miles, since when the car has been used sparingly (3,000 miles in the last 18 years) and dry stored. The car has had a major service by Jasmine Porschalink UK at 23,500 miles in February 2020.
Internally the car oozes quality with a Black Leather sports interior with four seats sporting red piping and rich pile carpets. Air conditioning, sun-roof, original Blaupunkt sound system and a host of electrical switch gear including cruise control make for luxurious long distance driving capability as well as being able to take on the twisty B roads!
The car comes with an MOT until July 2020. The car has been recommissioned by Jasmine Porschalink and has had new brake pads, cambelt and all belts changed, a new water pump, fuel and air filters. The beautiful wheels have been refurbished and fitted with four new Continental tyres. Front-engined Porsches are having the renaissance they richly deserve, and this very capable and rare manual GT model, is an opportunity to acquire a beautiful and appreciating Porsche. Now ready to be enjoyed by a new owner, this is one not to be missed and has the potential to be a shrewd investment.
