Vehicle Description
Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS For Sale
The 2.7 RS has a wonderful Porsche history. In the early 70’s Porsche 2.4S racing cars were being out performed by Fords and BMW’s. The new CEO of Porsche, Ernst Fuhrmann, wanted answers and having had discussions with the race engineers at the time, Norbet Singer and Wolfgang Berger, he was told that Ford had produced a small number of rennsport models taking advantage of every loophole in FIA racing regulations. Porsche challenged Tilman Brodbech, a racing engineer, to do something about it. Brodbech developed the front spoiler and the ducktail in foam and metal prototypes and was ridiculed by his fellow engineers but the transformation in handling was incredible. In addition, the current 2.4ltr engine was bored out to its limit at 2.7ltr and protected with Nikosil coating as was the case on the Porsche race cars. To enter this car to race they had to produce and sell 500 examples to the public for homologation. The marketing team said that no customer would pay more for a car with less weight provided by having fewer luxuries and refused to allow the car to be called the 911S as they worried their current 2.4S brand would suffer. So they called the car the Carrera 2.7RS (rennsport) (Carrera to honour their provenance of race winners at the Carrera Panamericana race). The car was presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1972 and to the amazement of the marketing team they took 500 orders in a week. The Carrera 2.7RS legacy is a great driving machine that started the RS program for future generations of Porsches and the use of the Carrera name.
The 2.7RS was the first car to different size front and rear wheels. Fitted with flared wheel arches to allow wider tyres and hence more rubber on the road, a distinctive ducktail spoiler to improve downforce, and a highly tuned flat-six engine, the brilliant Carrera 2.7 RS is the model against which all subsequent high-performance 911s are judged.
Our Car
This car is one of those first 500 manufactured cars and in RHD makes it a very special car.
This 2.7RS is chassis no 9113600396 of 1590 built and was registered in the UK on 7th February 1973 and has had 5 owners (2 of which were in the same family that acquired the car in 2003 and then sold it to the current owner in 2021). More importantly it is one of the first 500 built and one of only 111 RHD cars. The car has been used as intended competing in many races throughout its life. This means it has been really well maintained with the original engine and gearbox being properly and regularly serviced evidenced by an extensive invoice file from early 2000.
During the early years, the car was raced in the Porsche RS Championship. Owner #3 bought the car in 2002, and he commissioned Le Mans Porsche entrants Pickup Motorsport to prepare the car for track use and the invoice files includes over £60k of invoices including servicing, gearbox, brake replacement and maintenance, installation of a roll cage, a plumbed-in fire extinguisher, race seats and full harnesses, amongst other modifications. The car was then shipped to Australia, where it took part in the Classic Adelaide Rally, before it returned to the UK and saw extensive use as a track car, taking part in a number of Goodwood Road Racing Club and Porsche Club track days. In 2011 the car was transferred to Owner 4 (the son of Owner 3), and then placed in storage until 2017 and then sent to Porsche specialist Carrera Performance, to be stripped back and restored to road car specification; a process that was completed in September 2020 with £94k of detailed invoices.
The current owner acquired the car in 2021 and because the car had been in storage since 2011 and driven very little during and since the 2017 restoration, he spent c£20k with specialists such as Jasmine Porschalink, Unit 11 and Neil Bainbridge recommissioning the car mechanics. The car has covered 89,000 miles and runs perfectly and still benefits cosmetically from its high end restoration in 2017/20. Recent trips to the Le Mans Classic and NC500 have improved the mechanics continuously. The most recent service was May 2023 and other major work was renewal of rear and front pads and disks, replacement of distributor, fuel pump, carb linkages, wiring looms, dynamo and full engine retune.
As a result of its recent and extensive rebuild, which involved fully sandblasting the shell before reassembling and repainting the bodywork, this classic Porsche’s exterior is in very good condition. Inside the cabin has its original trim and upholstery. Seats are trimmed in black leatherette with black fabric centres. The rear seats, door cards and dashboard are also wrapped in black leatherette.
This car has a wonderful driving history and an invoice file from 2000 showing the extensive maintenance and servicing of the vehicle. It is a car that has been driven, and due to its race history it has had replacement body panels and repairs over time This car is one of those first 500 manufactured cars and in RHD makes it a very special car.. The original matching numbers engine and gearbox perform as one would expect from an RS of this era but because it is not a garage queen and has had a proper driving history but is restored and with some non original panels, it has been priced accordingly.
