Exceptional condition, matching numbers, hand-built “holy grail” of the 993 generation Sports Car International magazine published a road test of the GT2 in its September 1995 edition. “For the experienced driver, then, the GT2 is possibly the most exhilarating car on this side of a McLaren F1. It offers F40-style grunt in a completely civilised package, and like the F40 it’s an intoxicating challenge to drive well on the limit. But while the Porsche 911 GT2 spits you down a road or a track as quickly as any enthusiast could wish, it’s also docile enough for your grandmother to drive to the corner store…”

Intended primarily for racing, though still road legal, the Porsche 911 993 GT traces its ancestry all the way back through a succession of high-performance models to the legendary 911 Carrera RS of 1973. The car takes its name from the FIA’s GT2 category of production sports car racing for which it was homologated and has been produced in a variety of versions since its introduction in 1993 on the Type 993 iteration of the 911, regarded by many as the most beautiful 911 of all.

The 993 GT was launched at the Essen Motor Show in November 1994, the 993 GT’s 3.6-litre air-cooled flat-six engine produced around 424bhp reaching a top speed of 187mph and zero to 60mph in 3.9 seconds and to 100mph in 7.2 seconds (at the time, only the McLaren F1 got there quicker).

To enable track racing the 993 GT brakes, suspension, and wheels were up-rated to cope with the substantial increase in performance, and aerodynamic downforce was enhanced by a larger front air dam and a rear spoiler. The rear wheel drive 993 GT was considerably lighter – by some 300kg – than its AWD parent. This weight saving also extended to the use of aluminium body panels and lightweight racing seats, and the deletion of many of the interior fittings, including the Turbo’s soundproofing and rear seats. The 993 GT also featured widened wheel arches and a larger rear wing with air ducts in the support struts for improved engine cooling.

Selling on behalf of the 3rd owner, our example was supplied new on 28th September 1995 to the 1st owner in Japan, and is one of just 172 road cars built. This example nearly wasn’t built, as the first owner amended his original order for a 993 GT in race specification, after he was made aware by the supplying dealer that the factory had confirmed a short run of street legal examples. Correspondence from the agent on file. The letter of origin on file from Porsche confirms the car was produced to Japanese specification, left hand drive, and was sold in September 1995 in Polar Silver Metallic A8A8, with black leatherette bucket seats with dark grey leather inlays. Correspondence of file also confirms it was also fitted with the highly sought after earlier Sports steering wheel- also used in a GT1.

There is a comprehensive history file containing the aforementioned order and specification correspondence between the 1st owner and the agents together with original Japanese Porsche service books, stamped and a file of invoices from Australia and the UK showing that the car has been regularly maintained. Also on file is Porsche specialists Jasmine Porschalink’s list of all services undertaken between March 1997 at 3,714 kilometres and June 2024 at 34,010 kilometres (27 in all) plus the service book stamped by Porsche and various independent specialists. Invoices for all work done after June 2019 are on file and the car has an MOT to May 2025. Imported into the UK in February 2020, the car was acquired by the current owner for his collection in February 2021. He has been driven regularly, attending the Le Mans Classic in 2022, the NC500 and various local Porsche events. The car benefits from a full professionally fitted PPF. The car comes complete with handbooks, tools, jack and the original exhaust system (a sports exhaust is fitted at present). As road-going GT2s seldom come to market, and many of those road cars were still used competitively, the opportunity to acquire an unmolested low-mileage and low ownership example is one not to be missed by the discerning Porsche or supercar collector.
